During the period from June 7-9, 2022, our researchers Solvita Olsena and Laura Kadile will attend the 7th World Congress of Adult Capacity in Edinburgh, Scotland, representing Latvia and the University of Latvia, Faculty of Medicine.

The theme of the Congress covers the institute of decision-making capacity, especially how the law works when other people have the power to make decisions for someone else. The Congress is also about how the adult can be involved in these decisions as much as possible.* These include people with learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, dementia or mental illness. The overall goal of Congress is to protect and ensure the rights and legal interests of these people.

During the Congress S.Olsena and L.Kadile will take an active part and present detailed overview of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment's (CPT`s) jurisprudence. Both researchers together will participate and present their paper: "The Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman Treatment's (CPT's) Jurisprudence on Capacity and Incapacity of People in Detention", sharing their research results prepared within the research project. The study was done by collecting and analysing data concerning adult capacity/incapacity from the CPT’s reports and documents, covering only patients in psychiatric institutions and social care institutions.

S.Olsena and L.Kadile are very honored and delighted to be a part of this Congress and are looking forward having the opportunity to share their research results with broader auditory and group of healthcare professionals and health law experts around the world.
